Before we get started – disclaimer…You know I don’t stick to any style rules so these tips are really just a helpful guide to help you curate a working wardrobe to build from.  The goal is to feel more confident with your wardrobe and wear the colors that not only make you feel good but look good on you.

ARE YOU A COOL OR WARM UNDERTONE?

So the first thing you want to do in order to DIY your color palette is to determine  what color undertone you are.  The colors you identify with the most will be used to incorporate into your clothing, accessories and beyond.

There’s a few ways to figure out whether you’re a cool or warm undertone.  For some of us it can be both and if that’s you, you’re in luck! If you fall into both, you’re a pretty lucky gal because your color palette is even more expanded.

Warm and Cold undertones

THREE WAYS TO IDENTIFY YOUR COLOR UNDERTONE

  1. The first way to identify your color palette is by getting a piece of gold toned fabric and silver toned fabric, wrap it around your neck and see which one looks better on you.

2. The second way is to put your palm out face up. What is the first kind of tone that you see? Is it yellow, red or blue? Of course your hand doesn’t actually look yellow, red or blue but what’s the first color out of those three that you could see your skin identify with most?  Blue represents cool colors and cool undertones. If you see more red, you are in luck girl! It’s actually a little more easy for you because you can fall into cool or warm tones.  If yellow is what you see, you’re going to fall into the warm undertone colors.

3. Lastly, another way to find your color undertone is by the jewelry metals you wear most.  If you seem to gravitate more towards silver then you’re more likely to be a cool undertone.  Vise versa, if you wear more gold, then you’re going to be more of a warm undertone.

To help visualize this better you can use descriptions of hair, eye and skin colors.  For example, a cool undertone can be described as someone that has more of an ash tone hair ranging into a darker brown or blonde, white or gray hair. Same thing if your skin is more porcelain and translucent.  Also, if your eyebrows and eyelashes are on the lighter blonde or lighter brown side.

For warm undertones, you tend to have deep brown or red tone hair.  Maybe porcelain skin but with freckles which give your skin look darker and with contrast.  Same thing goes with darker skin tones.  You’ll likely fall into a warm undertone.

CREATING YOUR COLOR PALETTE

Once you’ve determined your undertone, you can begin to DIY your color palette.  You’ll do so by identifying if you relate most with bright or soft colors using the color theory of the four seasons. Blue undertones will identify most with the cool color seasons which are Winter and Summer. Yellow undertones will identify most with warm color seasons which are Spring and Autumn.

Which season you identify best with relates to your color undertone together with whether bright or soft colors are more flattering for your complexion.  In addition, you’re going to want to take your personality into consideration in order to choose your tone preference of bright or soft colors.

LET’S VISUALIZE THE COLOR GROUPS

If you’re a cool undertone and have a bold and bright personality verse a more like softer tone, gentle more calming personality, you’re going to want to go more for the bright colors that fall within Winter bright cool colors. The opposite of this is if your personality is more soft, gentle and calm, you’re going to go for more softer Summer soft cool colors within that same color scheme.

For warm undertone people that have a perky energetic personality, you’ll probably gravitate more towards Spring bright warm colors. On the other hand, if you’re more of a calm collective person, then you’re going to want to go more towards Autumn soft warm colors.

Remember earlier when I said if you noticed more red on your palm when trying to figure out if you saw more red, blue or yellow?  You can pretty much be all over the board and go with warm or cool undertones.

START ADDING THE COLORS TO YOUR PALETTE

Typically you’d like to start with neutrals like black, gray and white.  The tone that you choose of these colors will vary depending on your preference.  For example, you might like charcoal black verse just black and a cream tone verse white.  You choose what you gravitate towards and find most flattering to reflect your personality.

Next you’ll want to select three colors that you tend to wear most often and try to choose three shades of each from light to dark.

Your color palette will end up with twelve color tiles. You can of course add more but I wanted to keep it simple as an example.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR COLORS AND SAVE THEM

There’s lots of apps and websites where you can add “paint” functions to create your color.  Or you can visit your local paint store and pick up some swatches and save them in a journal or album of sorts.

ADDING COLOR TO YOUR OUTFIT WITH ACCESSORIES

If you’re still not so sure about getting rid of most of the black and gray in your closet then a simple and cost effective way to conquer your style with color is by adding color with your accessories.

Premier Designs Resort Collection does just that.  If you’re looking to instantly elevate any outfit—office or out-of-the-office— these so-chic ombre strands of translucent coral beads on the Spring Fever necklace will do the trick.  Of course you can’t leave home with just the necklace. Pair Spring Fever with the Tahiti earrings, the Bold & Beautiful bracelet and the Brooklyn ring and you’re set for the day through the night!

Using color in your accessories will give contrast to your outfit, add a pop of color and that “WOW” factor you’re looking for.  If you’re a business woman looking to make a memorable first impression, adding color to your business attire will get the job done.
